Seminar | I4.0 Impacts and case studies |11-12-2019| 12:00h

Abstract: We present a discussion of innovation and I4.0, a review of theories of innovation and technological revolution and illustrative examples of the transformation impacting at the economy and society in general by I4.0 and particularly on SMEs. At the same time we illustrate these impacts on SMEs Case Studies. Through a collection of 8 prospective case studies of SMEs that in several countries try to meet the challenges posed by Industry 4.0.

Seminar | Research Ethics for Integrity of Science | 13-11-2019 |11:00h

Abstract: Research ethics provides guidelines for the responsible conduct of research. In addition, it educates and monitors scientists conducting research to ensure a high ethical standard. The key ethical principles will be enlisted and discussed with researchers. There will be a discussion of application of the guiding ethical principles to research including issues of involving human beings as subjects/objects of research. Researchers will get a hint of integrity of science and will estimate the scope of virtuosity of a researcher.

Seminar | Maths for digital factory |10-10-2019| 11:00h

Abstract: By definition, the digital factory represents a network of digital models and methods of simulation and 3D visualisation for the holistic planning, realisation, control and ongoing improvement of all factory processes related to a specific product. In the last five or ten years all industrialised countries have launched initiatives to realise this vision, sometimes also referred to as Industry 4.0 (in Europe) or Smart Manufacturing (US).

In the first part of my presentation I will use this example to highlight chances for the collaboration between mathematics, engineering, and industry. I will present case studies showing how mathematics will be able to contribute towards digital manufacturing.

The second part of my talk is devoted to topology optimization. Based on a phase-field approach we show results for free topology optimization,  we discuss the role of additive manufacturing constraints and close with some remarks on two-scale topology optimization.

Seminar | Electric fields in the human central nervous system: computational models of new non-invasive techniques|06-08-2019| 12:00h

Abstract:  Current interest in the non-invasive application of electric fields to the human central nervous system is driven by the development of new techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), or tumor treating fields (TTFields). In this talk we will describe these techniques and the computational models we have developed to predict the electric field induced in the brain, spinal cord or brain tumor. We will then present our main findings and discuss future work.

Biography:

Pedro Cavaleiro Miranda is an Associate Professor in the Physics Department of the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon. He obtained a BSc and a PhD in Physics from the University of Sussex, UK and an MSc in Computer Science from the University College London. His research focusses on calculating the electric field produced by non-invasive brain and spinal cord stimulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), or by tumor treating fields (TTFields). The main aims are to optimize electric field delivery to the target region and to understand the biophysical principles underlying these techniques.
